I think people are fairly civil minded and a normal person does not gain pleasure or satisfaction from randomly insulting people.

I don't think it's wrong, necessarily. Sometimes all a jerk needs is a good punch in the face. I would just be scared the punch would hurt me more than them!
To reality....battles have not gone away with "civilized" society. Battles of the wits are, in my opinion, much more interesting. Most jerks aren't very intelligent and you can easily say things that make them go, "............Huh?" And then you laugh because they are stupid and walk away. That's how you get "punched in the face" in this day and age. Humiliation! Emotional abuse tends to be more satisifying...;)

I think if your stupid enough to insult someone bigger, stronger and in better shape than you, then maybe you do need to get the **** knocked out of you, unless your a woman then you should be able to talk **** to your husband anytime you want. By the way no one ever told the people in my neighborhood that you can't fight over a insult.

The Motivation would be to state that their remarks are wrong. Violence is not needed. A firm statement once that their behavior is wrong, and you no longer will communicate with them is all that is required. Persistance on their part would then constitute harassment and that is illegal. You can take it from there. Retaliation is not the answer. Accepting an insult gives it power, stating that it is wrong deflates it.

We live in a society of perpetual "jacka$$es" who think it's cute and amusing to mouth off at more civilized people. The only thing that would curtail their antics would be to be outcast by others (ideally their peers). I consider myself a witty person and have found that trying to embarrass them is often futile.

Hmmm...interesting question. Perhaps you might consider that only a small portion of Society is really part of the politically correct civilized compenent. You insult the wrong person and you'll be talking out of the wrong side of your face.

the motivation for the jerk to keep his mouth shut depends on the situation...for example, if you can get them ejected from an event that they want to be at because of their bad behavior, If they lose affection and attention from people they want it from because of their bad behavior, If they are embarrassed in front of people and don't want to be because of their bad behavior, these could all be motivators for them to stop their bad behavior, all without a physical altercation...

Social peer pressure is what usually keeps people civil with each other.
And the more people need to cooperate with each other in order to satisfy their needs, the more these people try to be nice to each other.
In small communities where people need to shop, work, and go to school with each other, the peer pressure is greater on the people to be civil with each other.
But in large cities, people often don't need each other that much. And this often means that they need to be civil at work with co-workers, but they don't need to be civil with their neighbours. Or they need to be civil with fellow students in one class, but they don't need to be civil with students from another class.

Either you can point out loudly to anyone nearby what a jerk they're being-though most of them don't seem to care-or you can maintain your dignity by smiling and calmly stating "Well, I understand that that's your opinion" and carry on with your life.

It is better to keep your mouth shut and look stupid than to open your mouth and prove it.
