You don't want to do drugs or alcohol while flying. They make the jet-lag intolerable. Familiarity is the only way to get comfortable in the air.
I'm not as uncomfortable with heights as it sounds you are, but they still get to me. I was concerned with this when I started working on my pilot's licenses. It still bothers me a bit in planes. Not so at all in helicopters, unless I get real high (more than 10,000 above ground).
Flying is disconcerting only because it's not normal for you. I would suggest, once you're on the plane, to close the shutter on your window, or take an aisle seat. Realize there will be a lot of activity and noises that are going to be disconcerting.
If you wish, email me direct through here, and I can describe to you exactly what to expect. I've been able to help others that way. Click on my username, and follow the links.

Yes, I have a fear. It's a horrible fear of falling from high places. It doesn't matter how high I go, it's the fear that the thing holding me up is going to give way and gravity will take over from there.
If you can ride in a car, and don't get motion-sickness, it may seem crazy but I would suggest a first flight in a small airplane with a licensed instructor. You can actually control the plane, so the limits of how far up or down, or how much turning angle is all up to you. It forces your brain to focus on "driving" the plane, and less time to think about how you got up in the sky. In case you start to freak out, the instructor can have you back on the ground in a matter of minutes, rather than being surrounded by hundreds of other people on an airline flight that could be several hours longer. WIth more education, you can learn what parts of the airplane make it go up in the air, and how other parts keep it all under control while it's up there.
Yes, I'm sure there are several drugs that can be used to keep you calm and relaxed in these situations. But it wouldn't be a great idea to get on an airplane in that condition. Just in case an emergency did happen, you wouldn't want to be in a mental haze or confused state of mind, so that you could evacuate quickly, safely, and without needing the assistance of others.

You aren't schizo and God isn't going to help you. All you have is a slightly exagerated version of a perfectly normal fear, anyone who can stand looking over a cliff edge without any trepidation has a problem with their self preservation instincts.
Try approaching your fears slowly, walk along a path near a hillside without ever getting to the edge and gradually work closer. Or go face the fear one day, go somewhere high and safe with someone you can completely trust not to be a fool about it and walk to where you feel uncomfortable and then sit down and wait it out. If you start panicing back off.
Try not to anticipate and don't push yourself further than you are comfortable or you may make things worse.
In the end you might have to see a specialist.
Vallium may help, it's an anti-anxiety medication.

probably the best way to fly if you want to get to Rome is fly on a commercial jet. keep the window closed and you can hardly even tell you are in the air. when you reach maximum altitude and look out the window it doesnt even really seem like you are in the air. it is more like you are looking at a blurry blue painting. if you dont get car sick you shouldnt have any trouble taking of or landing. just dont look out the window and pretend you are in a car going over a bumpy rode.

Take a commercial flight, get the window seat and shut the "curtain". Take a nap and look out the window after you've reached cruising height... about when they're bringing the drink cart thru. If you are above clouds, it will seem as if you could get out and walk on them.. that is the most beautiful and peaceful experience.
If you get too tense like I did on my first jet trip, just think of the plane as a "bus with wings"...

Darling, you are suffering from schizophrenia, a psychological disease, when a person suffering from this disease experience unfounded fears. You need proper counsel ling from a qualified Psychotherapist who will give you "auto suggestions". By adopting auto suggestions (when it will make it clear to you that to be fearful of heights is not the whole truth) and by this method you will become certain that it is not justified to be afraid of heights and high structured buildings.
If you fly in a plane you can muster your fear by taking some tranquilizer so that your mind become numbed and not responsive to high flight of plane.
