I watch their baby (my niece) a few days a week and she is almost 1 year old. Today a friend of mine brought her little dog over for a visit and my niece heard us talking about the dog. Then she pointed right at the dog and said, "Da Da...dog." My friend and I were both awestruck. It was intense at the time. Later this evening when my sister in law came to pick up my neice and I told her that she said "dog," she didn't believe me. She said "Right, there is no way I'm believing that, she can't say dog - she doesn't even understand what a dog is." "I don't believe you for one minute."
Well for starters I don't lie, especially about my baby niece who is learning to talk. This attitute is typical of my sister in law though. She is a very disbelieving person and if she didn't see it with her own eyes, it didn't happen and you must be lying. What do you call people like that...is there a word for it? It's frustrating.

ARROGANT! Some people can't be told anything, they think that they are that bit better than the next person. Might also be a bit jealous that she missed it.

Unfortunately it happens alot with people that are jealous. I once got told off for teaching my bf neice how to read after the child asked me to.The sister in law said " dont push my child you will give her brain damage" (As you know, cannot happen unless I plugged her brain directly to the internet! he he) Easiest thing to do is to either say to her, " you have a problem, and if you are jealous of me seeing you child do something great, then that is your issue. Pull your head out!" This way it will either cause an argument or get her to realise she is being a bit silly! Good luck because you will need it

Skeptical. We all have our little quirks. And i'm sure she wants to see all the firsts with her own child, so she might be even more doubtful or jealous. I wouldn't worry about it, just be two steps ahead of her and have things unfold in her lap so that she can see them for herself.

Next time...try to have the baby say it while she is in the bathroom (where the baby can't see her)...just a thought.

You call her jealous. She is upset that you got to witness something so wonderful and she missed it because she was off doing something she felt was more important than watching her own child.

The term is "skeptic."

Another, more colorful phrase, might be "Doubting Thomas." Or maybe in her case, "Doubting Thomasina."
