i believe yaqui lopez had 4 shots at a world crown and never became world champ not sure if that`s the most however as far as chuvalo i believe he only had 1 shot at the title. will check on boxrec brb. ok back actually yaqui lopez had 5 shots at a world crown and lost them all. lost 15 rd decisions to conteh, galindez (twice) and stopped by matthew saad muhammad and carlos de leon, the first 4 shots were at the light heavyweight crown and the 5th was against cruiserweight champion de leon. come to think of it bennie briscoe and clyde gray had a few cracks brb again.gray failed in 3 shots same for briscoe, armando muniz failed in 4 shots at the welterweight title.

He was a great boxer and won championships at welter and middle but this tells you how many times he fought for the title, and he has fought the most championship rounds in the history of boxing. Emile Griffith.

Good question. Not sure what the answer is, but I know Jersey Joe Walcott is up there with only a handful of fighters to gain a world title on his 5th try.

My pick is George Chuvalo. He's fought a few times and one of the best boxers who's never won the belt.

Walcott is a good guess. Mexican Featherweight Marcos Villasana is another fighter who won the title in his fifth attempt.
