Many communities have groups that get the Santa letters from the local post offices and answer them. Usually these groups are made up of senior citizens or other volunteers. Very often the letters are written by underprivileged kids, and their letters tend to get turned over to charitable organizations that do Toys for Tots sorts of things.

There are several places that will take the letters and may even send a reply. One of them is called North Pole, and I believe there is one called Santa Claus in Indiana somewhere.
If you google "Write to Santa" you will get lots of hits.

the letters doesnt go to a santa but to some organization or person posing as a santa

In our town the post office has a "Special Place" for them and then all of our postal employees take turns answering them and each one gets a coupon for a free animal cupcake at our local grocery store

They send them to the north pole, alaska. Its a small town where a couple has been known to take in all letters to santa.
The town is decorated in christmas decorum every day of all year.

They send them to alaska, to santa, and if santa see's that the kids were good this year, he will give them what they want.
