No, a Basset and Lab are both supposed to have long tails..Puppies have their tails docked between 3-5 days old, so, even if it was appropriate for that breed mix, it is much too late..
The ones in our town that are of the same mix, are absolutely lovely dogs! Yes, with long tails..

If a dog's tail is to be docked (shortened) this should be done in the first few days of life--usually 2-3 days old. Only experienced breeders and vets know how to dock tails properly. If a pup's eyes are open it's well past the time that it can be done relatively safely.

There is no need to routinely dock a dog's tail--it's done because it's customary for some breeds. In a few rare cases, when a dog has injured it's tail so badly that it cannot be saved, the tail must be amputated and this is a job for a vet. It's dangerous to dock a tail past the first few days of life and it requires general anaesthesia.

Traditionally tails are docked only on certain pure bred dogs. If your dog is not going to be showing, or doing work that would have a high risk of injury to their tail it does not have to be done. Within the purebreds, it is only done for cosmetic reasons most of the time. Few of the breeds that have their tails docked for a purpose actually perform in the original capacity they were bred for, so the tail docking is just to meet a cosmetic breed standard. When it is done, it is usually done when the pups are 3-4 days old. After that the risks of the surgery are far greater.

Neither basset or labs get their tails trimmed. The only "trimming" I do on my bassets' tails is to clip the twist of hair off the end when we're getting ready for a dog show.

You don't say what kind of puppy you have, but it doesn't matter... there is NO medical reason for docking tails in puppies. Occasionally a dog can sustain an injury where the only cure is to amputate the tail, but any and all tail docking should only be done by a licensed veterinarian taking clean surgical precautions.

If it is a breed that should have a docked tail, the breeder should've had it done by a vet by 3 days of age.

Neither of the breeds your dog is mixed with have docked tails. Why would you want to dock it?

NO you don't have to! It is only done because some idiot years ago thought that the dogs looked better with a shortened tail and it caught on.

IF you decide to do this (personally I would NEVER do that to any dog) then take it to the vet and have it done humanely. Don't do it yourself!

docking a puppies tail is for cosmetic purposes only. It should only be done by a licensed vet. It should also be done when the puppy is very young. Call your vet and see what age he/she recommends.

Docking a dog's tail is pointless and is done purely for aesthetic reasons. I cannot recommend cutting anything off of a live being.

Are you talking about cutting the dogs tail off? Docking is not even done on the breeds your dog is mixed with. And it's cruel. I breed a breed that is normally docked and i refuse to do it!
