God reminds them of their parents, who they are used to being treated like trash by. They just can't escape the feeling or circumstance.

(--From the people in the flock--)
Well, we should fear him...
He is loads and loads more powerful than we can ever be, and wiser. But he gets angry (or ask Noah about the flood). So we should really fear him, 'cause we never know how badly he will punish us. He's the only one who can send us to hell.
The equivalent phrase would be "Love God, God Loves You, So Do As He Says Or Go To Hell."
(--Answer--)
This is a rather crude technique from the Catholic Church to produce obedience. If we go to the very name, we know it is the "Roman Church".
Founded by a roman emperor.
How do the emperors in Rome work?
Be feared, be obeyed, punish the wrongdoers, be feared.
That surely explains a lot. Real Christians don't think that way. Real Christians say:
"So God, who is wiser, thinks this is right, and that is not. And I, with my free will, see that I win (even a bit) on this, or at least I don't loose. So I do this. But I don't win with that, or loose. So I won't do that.
BUT... the guys from the Catholic flock think they're right, and we, the outcast Christians, are heretics and wrong. So they're proud of being afraid of something they shouldn't be.
Help this helps.

I see the fear of God as a very early stage in a relationship with God. At first, someone might fear God because they become aware of the power of God, and they realize they have done some things displeasing to God.
But this is only a start.
A real close relationship with God is not one of fear, but of love.

It would be useful to be aware of the connotations of the word "fear". Our society is heavily influenced by a fear of things that hurt us, ranging from the fear of being a victim of crime, to the fear of being ridiculed, to the fear of being inadequate in bed (just to name a very few). More ofteh than not, it's horrible to be in fear of something/someone.
When Christians talk about fearing God though, it's not the same type of fear. They truy believe that God won't hurt them (i.e. He's not going to rain down punishments or send them to hell for doing something wrong). However, they still don't dare, don't want to live in a way that displeases God. It's more of a fear of letting God down than living under a tyrant's reign of terror.
Hope this helps you understand their perspective.

to follow up on someone above, children not only fear their parents when they've done wrong. It's the fear the helps keep children straight. They don't disobey for fear of punishment. If it wasn't for fear, there would be no construct for discipline. If there wasn't any discipline.. well look around at the majority of kids today.

I've never used the phrase "God fearing" to describe myself.
The use of the word "fear" is often misinterpreted. In the Bible the world would be better translated "in awe" and "being afraid".
God is creator, lord and judge of all. That's top of the list powerful! and awesome when you think about it. He will judge all people after they die.
That , or death itself, can be scarey if a person doesn't know God.
The Personal Relationship is knowing God well enough to know His thoughts towards you. He is perfect in love as well as in justice. And both His justice and love are things to learn about FROM Him. That takes seeking, talking to, willing to listen to God.
Matt 10:28-33
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32 "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

When it says to fear God, it is referring to a slightly older meaning of the word 'fear'. It refers more to respect/honour, to a certain extreme.
And on that note (if I am wrong about the meaning of 'fear' in this context)- children fear their parents when they have done wrong, yet they love them more than anyone else.

delight grow to be devil's Sin in the backyard...He needed to be worshipped as GOD; needed to furnish Adam and Eve with lies/deception that led to Paradise lost. Being a solid-out fallen angel together with his demon group, devil has been offering the servants of the Lord (the others are his captives already) temptations to lead them to stray removed from ending up the Lord's Will for Salvation. The delight of guy is the Lust of conceitedness being crammed with himself, his own mind (strategies) being his handbook. remember while JESUS CHRIST got here on his rescue venture and devil tempted Him, to cave in and worship Him, and he might supply him each and all of the kingdoms of the international. Get at the back of me, devil; for you delight in no longer the failings of GOD, however the failings of guy. guy is born inherent sinful nature (prideful) and this would desire to be conquered by using his salvation and co-dependency upon the only real and living God and His Son the Lord Jesus Christ who accomplished by employing his blood shed salvation for all of humanity.
