can you still get the 96/24 hi-rez multi-channel surround if you connect to a 96/24 capable multi-channel receiver? i understand that it is only in the decoding stage that limits playback of the multi-channel 96/24 part of dvd-a. ordinary dvd player connected via tos-link into multi-channel 96/24 capable receiver driving six separate channels and a subwoofer. will it work? thanks for taking the time to view my question.

The answer is probably no. There are very few DVD players that will pass the DVD audio signal digitally but they use a proprietary digital connector and you have to have the matching connector on the reciever. You'll usually only find this in the top of the line units.
99% of the time, you'll need to use the built in decoders in the DVD player and run thru a 5.1 or 7.1 channel analog pass thru input. Blame the music company lawers for this one...paranoia over digital copying.
