I'm visiting my sister's new in-laws in Hilo and Honolulu. I want to bring them gifts from the Bay Area that they can't really get there in Hawaii. I heard that chocolate is expensive there, so I was thinking Ghirardelli. And maybe smoked salmon? It has to be something that I can easily pack and is not too pricey. Thank you!

Stock up at Trader Joe's! I live in Hawaii and there are NO Trader Joe's stores anywhere in the state. I was just in CA and stocked up on nuts and snack mixes and shampoos and other fun things while I was there. I'm sure your Hawaii relatives will love you for it!
Aloha
PS - You're very sweet to think of getting things for your relatives. :)

The gift that you bring to them is really dependent on their personal tastes and what you can afford. I know that when I went to UK recently, I brought back a bottle of St. Aidan's and some shortbread cookies. However, some people don't drink, and it's difficult to get alcohol or tobacco products through the Canada Border Services. I have a cousin that collects souvenir spoons so whenever I go anywhere, I always try to pick up one during my travels. But your family may prefer you show up with something handcrafted from the UK (scarves? wool blanket?). The other thing is whether it is a surprise that you want to bring to them or it is something you can ask them about. If you ask them if there is anything they'd like you to bring, they may offer suggestions. If not, I am sure that whatever you bring will be appreciated as a gesture of friendship and affection.

Hawaii has all the major stores and all those things are available here, for just a bit more than mainland prices. We have Wal-mart, Costco, etc.
Just bring something that you know is special-- or ask them what they'd like. There are some things that are 'best' as you remember them from other places.
I really miss Trader Joe's and always have my family bring me stuff from them-- And food from Indian deli's---
The sour-dough bread sounds good...

SF is known for its Ghirardelli Chocolate, and Boudin sourdough bread. Take a 6-pack of loaves to Hawaii, and a nice variety of Ghirardelli chocolate. Trade it for some macadamias and hawaiian bread (yum).

Don't buy Ghiradelli. Honolulu has it everywhere in most of the stores. They have smoked salmon here too. You should just bring GOLDILOCKS. They don't have that here. I miss the Mamon Special, Boat Tarts, Ensymada's, etc....besides, Golden Coin is nothing like Goldilocks.

i think your idea for choclate and salmon sounds great - just don't take fruit or veggies - they will ask you to throw it away when you arrive - Enjoy your trip.
