it's Abu Thalib, a son of Abdul Muthalib, an uncle of Muhammad (pbuh).

I'm sorry Mark, but I don't think I understood you question that much.
Muhammad's grandfather "Abdul-Muttalib" stood by his side until he died, And Muhammad's wife "Khadiejah" also stood by his side until she died.
They both died at the same year during the boycott (Abdul-Muttalib and Khadiejah), and that's why it was called 'the year of sadness'.
This way or that, they were just supporting him, the protection is from God.
