At work everyone's doing Secret Santas, and my problem is that (because of personal financial problems) I don't have a penny to spend on anything. Even with my family we've decided not to share gifts this year because we really can't afford it.

The problem is that everyone at work is doing it, and they've already given me the person I'm supposed to buy a gift for. The expected price for a gift is $20! (which seems like a high price to pay for someone I'm not even close with).

What are some things I could give her, hopefully a little cheaper than 20 bucks, without looking stingy, and perhaps something that might look as if it could possibly be worth $20.

You could do something cute and quaint like a foodie gift basket. Pick up some cheap movie candy things (Snickers bar, Pack of M&Ms, Milk Duds, Sour Patch Kids, etc.) and a maybe you have a couple of microwave popcorn packets lying around your cabinets? A bottle of coke or two? You could pick up a $5 giftcard from Blockbuster and put it all together in a bag with tissue or something. It shouldn't run you up too much. If you don't have the popcorn you could ask your friends if they could spare a pack, which will save you from having to buy an entire box of 'em.
Package it nicely and viola! A nice, affordable presents. You'll actually probably get major praise for going a different gift route.
Hope all goes well!

Have you thought about re gifting something? I've done this in a pinch before. I always have something in a box somewhere or a gift that I never used that I can pull out to give someone. It's great when you don't have time and/or money to spend and the item is something that you will absolutely not use.

Yes, go to TJ MAXX's or Marshall's and get something that looks expensive. However, I would go shopping sooner rather than later because everything gets picked over early during the holiday season. Good luck!

Go to Ross or TJ Maxx and get something brand name for $5 - a picture frame, scarf set, dish set, etc. I found tons of awesome bridal shower gifts there for next to nothing.

Perhaps a nice used book? They are often very inexpensive and also classy.

Come to think of it, large bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Borders often have very nice, inexpensive books on their bargain tables. An art book, for example, should be appropriate.

But her a gift certificate to a local restaurant and then see if you can get her to take you to lunch. That way, both of you might benefit.
