Thread count is a measure of number of threads (woven into the fabric) per unit of area. I believe it's number of threads per square inch. A higher thread count means that there are more threads per square inch, and therefore the threads are thinner, which makes the sheets feel softer and more comfortable.

Higher is softer. 200 is like a bed in a bag or cheap sheet set. Anything lower is stiff and really way too rough. 350-400 is pretty good. Higher than that is total luxury. But thread count is not the only factor. Egyptian cotton is softer so a lower thread count in that could be softer than a higher one in other fabrics. Most bedding departments that sell higher thread counts have little swatches you can feel. See what you like best.
Good luck!

The thread means how many threads per square inch . The more the finer the fabric For a sheet 140 is probably the lowest count and 180 is a smoother material, beyond that 200 and 300 get rather luxurious.

The higher the count the more tightly woven the fabric. I never buy anything less than 200. (at the least and it better be a pattern I LOVE)

200 at LEAST! i like my 420 thread count sheets. most people don't buy 600-800 thread count sheets... that is not standard, but above.
