I heard that there's lots of tiger shows in Bangkok & Pattaya (right in the city centre no less). Isn't that dangerous? I mean what if one escapes? Surely if you want to see such shows, the zoo or circus is the placewhere you can watch insafety.

Yah, you said the wrong thing! It is not TIGER show, it is Thai-Girl show! It is a sex performance entertainment show, using female organs to open bottle caps and alot of dangerous stunts to perform for tourists like us! It may even looked scary and gruesome at some point during their performances.
Anyway, if you're really referring to a real Tiger Show, you can try to ask your hotel's travel agent to help you book the tickets to the zoo or circus, I've been to the Samphan Zoo before, there are tiger shows and many animal performances. The zoo is located in Bangkok but it is in the outskirt. You've to take a bus for about 1 hr to reach there.

The tiger show or "Tiger Temple" is in Katchanaburi. Its about 2 hours drive outside of Bangkok. You can book with an agent in Bangkok for about 550 Baht which in american is about 15$. The tour will pick you up from your hotel in Bangkok and take you back at the end of the trip.
The tiger temples is a sacred open animal park. The tigers are usually kept caged. During the hours of 1:30 - 4 pm the tigers are let out of the cage in the Tiger Canyon. The tigers during these times are kept on 6 ft leashes chained to the ground.
The staff at the temples will escort you holding hands and allow you to have your picture taken with several of the tigers.
The temples will not let you wear bright attractive garments such as a red shirt, however they will provide you with garments if your dressed innapropriatly.
The Tiger Temples is a sanctuary for all animals. There are many baors, peacocks, deer, and other wild life that are free to roam around as they please. The monks feed these animals as they are budhists and believe all animals are reincarnated spirits. Its an open door policy for all the animals in the sanctuary except for the tigers, cheetha and bear.
The monk who started the temple claims that one day a tiger wondered into the village sick and dying. All of the villagers were to scared to help the tiger except for this one monk who nursed it back to health. The monks claim all of the tigers came to the sanctuary on their own looking for food and shelter. True or False im not to sure. Some say the tigers are sedated, but theres no proof.
The temples feel pretty safe and petting a tiger is a very magical thing for most people. Depending on where you stand on animal rights issues, the monks of the temple claim all of the tigers are there on their own free will. Many of the tigers have bread and they will soon start releasing the offspring back into the wild.
Currently they are expanding their facility in Katchanaburi. Definately worth checking out.

The are tiger zoos in Sri Racha (a little north of Pattaya) and on the southern end of Koh Samui. You can have your picture taken holding and petting a cute tiger cub. The Sri Racha tiger zoo is a nice family event. There are also swarms of gators and other animals and Sea World type shows.
They also have tiger cubs for picture taking at the FantaSea show on Phuket island. The FantaSea show is a nice attraction, worth seeing if you are in Phuket.
