In my experience it does happen a lot. People will lie to cover their own butts. The insurance companies will encourage them to do so though. The insurance company does not want to pay out more than they have to, and will even send their customers literature instructing them to never admit fault. It is just the name of the game.

All the time! I work for a PI attorney and we get people with the same story almost everyday. As long as you have a police report, though, you'll be fine. See, police typically intimidate people - so those at fault don't have enough time or confidence to make up a story, and usually will tell the truth at the accident site. However, once they leave the accident, they realize that they are about to be slammed by the insurance company. So they make up a story before talking with their insurance company. That is why personal injury attorneys make so much money off car accidents. Once they have a copy of the police report and the at-fault carrier learns their client lied to them, it is pretty much in the bag for the other party to be awarded money.

Muhammed, you twice...brother three times?? only one thing to say here "GET IT IN WRITING!!" Like this, you say AT THE SCENE "Yes, I agree that you hit me and it was not my fault. Please sign this: I ran full-throttle into ___(your name here)___without regard to the personal safety of anyone here or abroad; furthermore, I assume full legal, moral, and spirital responsibilty for this and any future accidents which may result either directly or indirectly from my incompetence and/or personal confusion or any other factor to which now admit guilt. I hereby agree to pay full and complete damages resulting from this and any future accidents I most certainly will cause given enough time, regardless of any determination subsequently made by my insurance company, should I find one willing to carry me. Furthermore, I agree never to enter this or any public roadway until I have acquired the understanding of how to F***King drive. Also, I agree not to call my mother, friend, boyfriend, aunt, or pastor before/during/immediately after this or any future accident which I am highly likely to cause simply due to the fact that I can barely drive let alone drive and talk on a cell phone simultaneously.
Be sure they sign AND date. Tomorrow buy uninsured motorist coverage keep this contract in your glove compartment and you should be safe, Allah willing.

everyone lies about whos at fault. I was hit while crossing the street in a 35 mph zone and the person who hit me was going 60. I'm blessed I'm still alive and got out with two broken legs a broken arm and rods and bolts to replace what was missing. But the person knew they were wrong and told the police that I jumped in front of their car. But everyone lies about whos at fault no matter how wrong they are. But in the end they have to answer to the big man not me

Any insurance company will always advice their clients not to admit fault. So the answer is 99%, there are few remaining honest people out there.

people will do that so their insurance won't go up as much. It happened to me once before, only the guy who lied was caught and had a court hearing over it.

Thats why you get a police report immediately. That way there is no backing out of what happened.
