Sometimes I get panicky and feel like I need to run away. Then my head feels like it is in a vice that is squeezing. This happens almost everyday. The doctor said it is just mild to severe anxiety. Does anyone have any suggestions beside medicine. Please help???

Drugs are not the answer; they only mask the symptom. I now have a degree in Ayuvedic medicine, and I cured myself of panic and anxiety without drugs of any kind.

Ayurveda teaches that anxiety is caused by "Excess Vata," a certain type of energy. Read the book "Vital Energy" by Dr. David Simon for more info on this. Ask a bookstore to order it for you. As I said, I cured myself of severe anxiety with Ayurveda.

The thing that helped me the most:
Listen to a CD of chanting monks, Enya, or any music you find very relaxing. Lie down, close your eyes, and listen on headphones. While you're doing that, take long, slow deep breaths, through your nose. Your breathing is very important. This sounds so simple, but I'm telling you, those chanting monks brought me down from many an attack!! They're the best!! Enya too.

To prevent anxiety:
Completely eliminate all sugar and caffeine from your diet. This is rule number one.
Exercise regularly, yoga is great for anxiety.
Eat regularly, warm, nourishing foods like soups, oatmeal, etc. Forget salads and ice cream, all cold stuff. Do not drink cold beverages either. Drink hot herbal tea.
There is alot more info on dietary recommendations in the book, and other lifestyle recommendations as well.

Take control of this before it intensifies; believe me, you do not want to experience an actual panic attack. You can do it; I had it very, very bad, and I'm fine now. Ayurvedic treatment is excellent for anxiety. Read Dr. Simon's book and take my advice, you will overcome it. Don't let anybody tell you you need Xanax or any other drug; you don't need it. try to realize when youre getting these feelings. I used to suffer from anxiety every day. Instead of my head feeling like it was in a vice, i threw up. I did this for over a month straight, First day of class, nervous about school, when i had second thoughts about my b/f and him being faithful, really when ever i worried about something enough. I didn't know what it was at the time, but yeah turns out it's anxiety. I hate pills, i never took any of the ones the doctors gave me. I've only had one mild anxiety attack in over 2 years. All i did is stop worrying. I know it sounds rediculous, and all, but honestly i got fed up with feeling that way for so long, and i realized that all the times i was worrying about something, the out come wasn't nearly as bad as i was anticipating it. I started to ignore the feelings and just kept strictly telling myself that nothing has happened, and it won't happen. I'm spending all this time worrying, and for what? All it does is cause me more problems and it's not helping at all.
over all, just play mind games with your self and equal out the anxiousness. It takes time, but if you just stop caring so much (but keep being responsible) it won't be so bad. good luck!

Try a Chiropractor --- I have been seeing one for the last month and feel like 8 years of stress has literally come off of my body. Really amazing. I honestly have less stress, less anxiety, more patience, etc. Your Spine is the heart of your nervous system. It operates everything. You may have a few discs out of line and a simple adjustment does the trick. It is something that you have to keep up on but well worth it!! Run a search on Yahoo on chiropractic care and you can see the research for yourself on it. A good chiropractor will tell you what areas of the spine are affecting what parts of your body. And what breathing exercises, etc can be done to assist w/ the anxiety. Good Luck!!

I also deal with anxiety. The good part is that there is hope and as you get used to dealing with it, you'll be able to carry on more as normal. In my case, dealing with my anxiety really opened me up to becoming a more relaxed person overall. Here are some things I've tried.
Meditating: LOVE this! I just repeat a word over and over again (like calm) and sit crossed legged. I keep my eyes open so I won't fall asleep. I try to not think about anything, but I'm not too hard on myself. If I think about something, then I just say to myself "nope, clear your mind."
Yoga: great exercise. It taught my mind to relax my relaxing my body.
Not acting on my anxious thoughts. I used to get so caught up in my anxiety because I would indulge these thoughts "what if___ happens" "I should be doing/saying_____" And it's ok to think those things, but not indulging them is the key.
I don't know if you are too hard on yourself, but most people with anxiety are. I read the book Ragamuffin Gospel, and it changed the way I thought and lived. That, more than anything, has freed me from anxiety.

I do empathise with you, because it must be tiring to have panic attacks happening everyday so much that it's interfering significantly with your daily life. Perhaps your doctor may have advised you on seeing a psychologist (who is experienced in this area) to help you identify the source of your anxiety and ways in which you can overcome them. It takes little steps, but you'll be able to give it the boot, for good.

Just remember that it's not an illness or a dysfunction. Anxiety is essential, but too much of it is unhelpful. However, you can, and are able, to get rid of that excess baggage that is holding you down.

Think of the brain as the central control room, and you are the programmer.

You can do it. :)

Does it just happen or do certain things trigger it. I also suffer from anxiety. Most of my panics are worry but somethimes thinking about someting I have to get ready do do causes a panic attack. Take a deep breath walk around a sec and regroup, know what ever it is this too shall pass. It is a terrible feeling but you are not nuts, you may have to take a med for short time to learn to deal with this, you are just a very caring person and have this because you worry about others more than you.....Remember you are a great person........

Good on you for not rushing to the aid of medication, which can be very dangerous as it interferes with your natural chemicals (long-term use can be very dangerous). Some people just are 'more' anxious than others - this is fine! the best way to help anxiety is MEDITATION!
Meditations, draws your focus, and causes you to relax. Meditation, can be hard for some to master. When my mind is in a state of anxiety, I listen to Insight Meditation CD's. I find The rain sound is soothing, and apparently it help syncronise the hemispheres of the brain! GOOD LUCK!

Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days.When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

Get exercise if you can as it removes toxins and helps you relax after. Next, meditation. Also if you know stress is around the corner a hot bath will open your capalaries oxygenating the blood. Suck a lolly if you can not do this and use smwlling salts. Deep breathing may help but exercise is great.

Develop a rational thought process that you run through in your head every time you start feeling nervous. I find counting backwards from 100 helps distract from the panic too.
