Yes, assuming that he or she was an honest man or woman who was trying to do his best for the good of the country, according to good values and laws.
Just because someone believes in a certain religion does not mean that they are an honest, decent person. And there are plenty of honest, decent people who don't belong to my religion.

Apparently it is impossible for an atheist to become President of the USA under the current laws of some states. Even if it was legally possible, I doubt (s)he'd get enough votes to win the elections because sadly there many Christians in the country who have been brainwashed into thinking that atheists are evil and amoral (just look at the answers you got here) and who would vote for an incompetent Christian over a qualified atheist any day. (Fortunately not all Christians are like that).
Personally I know that atheists are just as qualified to be President as anyone else, but then again I'm neither Christian nor American, so you're probably not looking for my opinion. I just wanted to point out the law thing.

Of course I do. Just because one is an atheist doesn't make them better or worse than a Christian. Yes, America was and still is (to a certain extent) a very religious country but times have changed - drastically. And don't forget that line in the constitution "separation of church and state", meaning religion or one's personal beliefs should have NO part in the government or the way this country is to be run. As long as the person who would leading the country is an overall good person, I see no harm in it.

Anyone can be President of the United States if he or she is qualified. Joseph Liebermann, a Jewish man, would make a better president than John Kerry, a Roman Catholic man.

Powder keg!
Not Christian. Not qualified to answer. Will refrain.
(OK, so I can't refrain. Anyone who falls under the qualifications of the law is technically qualified, so yes!)

yeah, sure, why not? As long as the president is a good man (or woman), what does it matter what he believes?
most humanists are atheists, and they treat me with more respect than any christian i've ever met.

I would guess so if the nation would vote for him. The presidents are not merited by any religious preference.

And why the hell WOULDN'T they be qualified? Would you be so ashamed if a Muslim or Jew was elected president?
As long as they don't try to blurt out religion (too communist for my taste), it's fine.

That would be pure SUICIDE! There are basic morals from our founding Christian fathers that need to be present. Sorry, but Atheists have way too many amoral beliefs. Anything goes attitude. No way!!!! Would never work b/c I think most Americans are religious in some way or another. An Atheist president would be like a mouse in a lions den. How can anyone respect a president with no moral beleifs?

I don't think a President's religion impacts their qualifications.
