Man was created on day 6--therefore, this is a man's number. It is used 3 times to show emphasis just as "holy, holy, holy" emphasizes God's holiness. The number is placed on a person's forehead because if he thinks that a man or manmade organization (perhaps a government) will be able to save or protect him, he has the mark which is visible to the angels and God. The number is also placed on a person's hand because if he acts in a way that shows his trust is in a man or a manmade organization, he has the mark. Now comes the tricky part--the Bible says that without the mark a person will not be able to buy or sell anything. This is misleading some to look for a universal symbol like a tatoo or implant of a credit card or some other material thing. Satan wants you to be looking for some visible sign--if you are, you may forget that the mark is not literal but your thoughts and actions will be seen by the one who is able to grant you everlasting life.

Ancient ciltures did not have separate numerals. They used letters as numerals. It's like saying A=1, B=2,...J=10, K=20,...T=100, etc. Combinations of letters could produce larger numbers. Some people realized that any combination of letters was a potential number, so they tried to assign meanings to the numbers and consequently the names. That was the birth of numerology.
In Revelation, the number "666" (or "616" in some ancient mss) was the numerical value of a specific name that the author didn't want to specify. Some suspect it was Nero, rumored to have returned to life as Diocletian. In any case, there's lots of flexibility. Do you use the public name, the personal name, the family name or combinations of them all? (It's kind of like anagrams). The fact that Nero and Diocletian are long dead means that people have to find someone else. The Devil is always convenient. With a world of alphabets and a variety of spellings, one could conceivably make it out of anyone's name. But it's not the numbers that are "evil", it's what they represent, if you can figure out who it is.

the number 6 in Bible prophecy represents worship of man, and is the number of mans imperfection, works, and disobedience. Since it is a number of a man, we must find the man whose name equals 666. there is a religious office held by certain men whose name equals 666. Vicarius Filii Dei means representative of the Son of God(Pope). in latin letters have numerical values associated with them. this is written on their Mitre
