You have windows 2000 pro! It cant be upgraded to an older operating system! As far as 2000 pro, its a very stable operating system compared to earlier windows versions! Run it! Its not that much different to understand! Its also the precursor to windows XP. As a matter of fact, I have XP on only one of my lan systems and all the others are 2kpro! The XP is far slower than the 2kpro units!

Windows 98 would actually be a downgrade. Generally speaking, Microsoft has always had a business and consumer version of Windows. From oldest to newest, this is how it goes.
Business - WinNT4, Windows 2000, WinXP Pro
Consumer - Win95, Win98, WinMe, WinXP Home
There are suttle differences between Windows 2000 and 98. Windows 2000 is actually a more stable and robust system than Win98. If you could, I would just leave everything as is and learn the suttle differences.
If you really want to upgrade to a consumer version, then WinXP would be the better choice. Win98 would be harder to find and it is a very unstable operating system.
It costs about $100 to upgrade to XP. Insert the CD and it will run you through the upgrade process. Bad part is that any preinstalled software such as Microsoft Office will not work after the upgrade.

win2k is very similar to xp, both of them using the nt kernel. I personally use win2k server which I like better than xp, primarily because it's faster and is more open to tuning. It upgrades to xp with no problem for most likely less than $125 if you look around, you don't want to go backwards to 98. win2k is far more secure and very stable. If your on the internet, go to microsoft and get all the service packs right away. Using windows update is the easiest way. Win2k is the last system that does not look for official registration and still allows all updates and service packs. If your interested in learning about how windows works, there is a lot of good info both at microsoft and all over the internet about it but be care full with some of these sites advise, lot of wannabees out there. The first thing to do is learn how and make a recovery disk. This is true for any system. Beyond that, ask if you want some additional help.

No such thing as Windows NT 2000 Pro......There is Windows NT which was the predecessor to Windows 2000. and there is Windows 2000 Pro.....you can upgrade to XP, I think it's less than $200, but Windows Vista will be available in Feb, I would just wait till then.
IT Says "Operating System: Windows 2000"
I don't think the PC is over 6yrs old, so I doubt it came with NT.
Good Luck

I am not sure what you mean but you may have Windows 2000 Pro it is and NT based OS. And 2000 is the year...so upgrade to 98.... no.....Change to XP...Maybe. I would need to know more about the hardware. You can use the link below for XP pricing...look at the OEM prices..about 90 bucks and that is not an upgrade, it is a full version legal disk.
But if it is 2000 Pro Stick with it!! You will learn it its not that different.
