They most certainly do. Many do it because they believe they've waited to long and can't stand to wait and plan, they want it now. Others have some form of wish against their marriage that may effect a normal marriage and so they rebel in a secret elope.

Yes, people really elope! And not for the reasons you may think.
My husband and I did. The reason - too much interference from family and friends on how, when & where things should be done and why.
This was our wedding and we wanted it to be the way WE wanted it.
We told everyone our wedding date once, then didn't mention it again unless it was brought up. They were all informed we were eloping and would have our reception later. They thought we were joking. They forgot about it.
We had OUR wedding the way we wanted it to be without the hassle of interferring family, and it meant more to us that way than having a migrane trying to please everyone else!
So, in most cases elopement is a matter of sanity and yes, throw in the "romance" too.
It was the most perfect wedding anyone could wish for.

Yes people do elope, and I can understand why, planning a wedding can be stressful and expensive. When you read traditional wedding sites and magazines there is a lot of pressure to conform to what is traditional and it can make you feel very stressed out! So eloping is a way of getting married without all that stress.

Actually, my husband and I eloped one week ago! We are both 30 years old and it's our first marriage. We both wanted a private ceremony but knew that our families would NOT have that. So we slipped away quietly and did it our way. We have 'set the date' for December 31, 2007. They will be none the wiser and our stress will be reduced because we can relax in the fact that we are already married! We're also in different countries and to get visas sorted out, it would take FOREVER. So he has all my medical benefits and we can get moving on the visa paperwork.

Yes people really do elope. In my family it is darn near tradition. (lol) I eloped to avoid the mixing of the families. His family is UBER-religious and mine is...well...not. We ran off to Vegas, but his parents were there and mine were there. Mine were there anyway, they were on Vacation. We told his parents what we were doing and if they wanted to see their eldest son marry then they should show up. We gave them a week to make arrangements.
So I guess technically we had a VERY small destination wedding.

Yes, people still elope.
Sometimes it's spur of the moment; the decision to get married is spontaneous and they don't want to wait.
Others have been together for while & they decide to finally make it legal. Some want a intimate ceremony with just thetwo of them. And others do it for a variety of other reasons.

I know people that still do... about 2 of my couple friends just looked at each other one day and hopped a plane to vegas!
And they have both been married about 5 years now!

If you define eloping as flying out to Vegas and not telling anyone in either family until afterward...then my sister and her husband did it! I told her she just didn't want her fat sister (me) to be a bridesmaid.
