Actually, the underpass thing is not recommended. The people in Kansas that everyone saw survive were lucky they were hit by a weak tornado. The major F-5 Oklahoma City tornado killed many under underpasses with either 300 mph wind-blown debris or sucked them out like a vacuum and blew them across the landscape.
If you can see the tornado, and it is heading away from you... just sit tight. If it is heading toward you, and you have the time, drive away from it at right angles. Example, if it is heading North, travel east or west. If it is too close, find safety below ground if possible, or in the nearest depression. Do not stay in your car, as it will be tossed around with you in it.
Otherwise, for more info from the National Weather Service, please read the info at the link below.
Main thing, when the weather is threatening... stay alert and stay informed.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.
According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

If the tornado's coming for you, you should definitely get out of the car, because vehicles get tossed by tornadoes like toys. You have a better chance of staying on the ground if you're lying flat in a ditch or under something sturdy. If you have time, get inside a building and into a basement. They always say don't try to outrun a tornado, especially if you aren't familiar with the roads in the area.

Get out of the car and seek cover in a low lying area like a ditch. A tornado will pick up your car like a enraged toddler and toss it, you won't survive. Warchild, trained in tornado survival and an over the road driver.

Make a U-turn as quick as you can and floor it. Get the hell away as fast and far as you can from that thing. Just make sure you are driving away from it and not towards it.

If you are near a building, look for a brick or concrete one. Seek shelter there. If you are on an interstate or highway, go to the nearest overpass. If there isn't an overpass available, seek shelter in a ditch or low lying area. Be sure to cover your head!!!!
