Our Boxer has very small teeth that abrley poke out of his gums. He LOVES to chew on rawhides adn has zero interest in stuffed animals, balls or other toys liek that,. His rawhide is too ahrd though and it makes his gums bleed b/c his teeth are too small to really chew it up much! Do they make softer rawhides that will be easier fo rhim but still take him awhiel to gnaw on? He gets soft treats, butI'm talking about a bone that he can sit and work on...

I haven't seen a dog yet that when vigorously chewing on something as hard as a rawhide didn't have a little gum bleeding. The bleeding is not necessarily anything to worry about. You will probably experience that with any hard chewy. But I would never recommend rawhide as they can be swallowed and either lodge in the throat or sit in the dogs stomach because they are not completely digestible. A much safer alternative are Nyla bones. They are available at your local pet store and come in a wide variety of flavors such as, hotdog, chicken, bacon and cheese, peanut butter, and even fruit. They are completely digestible and dogs love them. They come in different sizes and are hard enough for them to be chewed on for awhile. They are also less expensive than rawhides. My St. Bernard and English Mastiffs love them.

Try CET hextra chews, they are made by Virbac, they are wonderful for the teeth and you don't have to worry about intestinal obstruction as you do with raw hides. We actually just did abdominal surgery on a dog who had an intestinal obstruction due to a rawhide. safer to just not give them to your pet at all.

try a Kong toy (I know you said he didn't like toys) but you can stuff this with peanut butter or soft treats much safer than rawhide. you can get these at petsmart or petco

Try soaking the rawhide in warm water until it is softer.

Our dog really likes IAM's biscuits. We get him the petite ones and he loves them. We have him trained so that when we say "treat" he really gets excited and happy.
