Yes it is against the law to drive without current auto insurance. If you are pulled over by a cop, he will automatically check the status of your license, the registration on your car (to make sure it is yours or is not stolen, etc. and is registered) and he will also ask you for proof of insurance.
Driving without insurance is a serious offense.
If you are caught driving without proof of insurance, depending on the laws of your particular state, you could have your car impounded, as is the law in MN or at a minimum you will receive a ticket and possible fine, as in CA. Even in lenient states where they issue tickets, if you are caught and ticketed more than once or twice without insurance, your license will be suspended.
Check your State Driver's Manual or call your Department of Motor Vehicles. Better yet, go there in person....they rarely answer their phones.
Regarding your driving record....It is never too late to start to wipe your slate clean by driving carefully one day at a time. Eventually time goes by and you will find you are not getting pulled over and you will have developed safer driving habits. And remember, your bad driving record does not stay with you forever. It might take a few years, but if you stay under the radar and drive safely, you will have a clean record in no time.
Good luck.

It is against the law
If you are involved in an accident in some states you are automatically at-fault even if the accident wasn't your fault
You can go to jail and your car can be impounded
You will probably have to pay a higher rate for high risk insurance, but that is better than loosing your license

You really need to get in touch with your local DMV or State Patrol office to find out about the laws in your state. In SC if you are caught driving with no insurance your license are can be suspended and you can go to jail. They can also have your car towed.

it can be depending on the state. but it is always good to get insurance on your vehicle. why are you speeding so much? yes an insurance can deem you uninsurable because of your driving history.

Most states require either insurance, or a reserved account containing a fairly significant amount of money.

The state you live in has a list of companies that take high risk drivers such as yourself ... contact the dmv for a list.
