Its because they don't care if someone else is in the same isle as they are. They think that the other people can wait until they make their selections.
Whenever i go shopping i move to the side of the isle so people can pass me. Its just common courtesy.

Im probebly guilty of this once in a while. But more so I get pissed off cuz people arnt moving fast enough for me eather. yesterday I was in the store I had a cart full of food and a baby in a carseat up front my 2 year old in my arms trying to push the cart and keep a eye on my 6 year old. And their was some guy stairing at bread and some mom and her 13 year old daughter just standing in the middle of the isle. Its like cant you see Im standing here trying to get through and they couldnt even just push their carts to the side I had to push mine all the way around them and weve in and out. Ya slow shoppers suck

I either say "EXCUSE ME" or I move their cart over so I can get through. I can't stand arrogant people that think they can hold up everyone else on the face of the earth while they shop. GRRR
Now if it is an elderly person, I just grin and bear it--they are old. But all those others that think the world revolves around them--watch out, my cart is coming through.

This irritates me to end! They have their head up their a$$es! I will park the cart at the end of the aisle and run to get whatever I need. I'm a speed shopper and I find that it's easier to weave through quickly; otherwise, I'm stuck behind someone who is lost in their own little world! Better yet, I'll shop at odd hours, like two in the morning-much fewer morons getting in the way.

Well, that's the protocol, Stroms!
You push your cart along the middle of the aisle so you don't block the other shoppers' view of the shelves. You pass oncoming carts on the right. If you have to pass someone ahead of you, you move over to the side where the stuff you want is and politely say "excuse me", upon which the person ahead of you smiles back at you and moves over to the opposite side.
Get with the program, girl! :)
I get annoyed when people inch their cart along one side when I'm trying to get something there.

Hey, this is the USA and everybody thinks the world is all about THEM. Leave room in the aisle? Have your money ready before you check out? Have all those g*o*d*d*a*m*n* save 'three cents coupons' in one place instead of in your pocket, underwear, kids diapers, and by the way your kids aren't that cute that you can talk to the really old slow checker about them COMPLETELY ignoring anyone else on the planet who may actually have a life. This is the most selfish, narcissistic, absorbed, inattentive and brainless society on the planet - except for the French.

Some people focus so hard they aren't even aware of the other people around them. So just say excuse me and they will wake up and move over. I used to shop at a store that the aisles were so narrow there were 1 way signs throughout the store. If you forgot something you were totally out of luck!

Just say "excuse me!" really loud. I have no problem getting vocal with these types. I think people in general are more afraid to talk to each other in public than they used to so oblivous types, like the ones you describe, get away with murder because nobody corrects them. These are the same people that take half an hour to make a simple right hand turn. The same that bring crying infants to movie theatres. The same that run red lights because they know you won't ram them with your car.

How old are they? It is snowbird season here in FL & these people will not only do that, but wait until the bill is totaled before they take money out. Then, count out small change, sometimes pennies, holding up the entire line. Then, to top it off, they will stop in the doorway to the exit of the store to check their receipt!

If you were focused and determined to find what you want in the store and it was the most important day to you where your job or life depended on this meal your making, so finding everything is soooo important you zone out while shopping thinking about what's going to happen or whatever. Then you will be in somebody's way yourself. Can you see yourself telling you "Can you move to the side please?" well if you do, then tell them to wake up and move to the side next time you go to the store.
