The starter is located at the lower rear of the engine, bolted to the transmission bell housing. It can be either on the right or left side, depending what engine you have. You can see it from under the vehicle.

It's located on the lower left hand side (Driverside) towards the back of the engine. Just make sure to disconnect the negative battery cable if you plan on replacing or removing it. A local BMW shop nearly burned down because a Tech left a swinging starting hanging over night and it grounded.
