I was thinking about purchasing of this camera. does anyone know whether or not this camera is a good one as far as picture quality and other features?

Go for it. Its a nice camera and it looks nice. I think girls will like the SD40 better because of its color. But if that doesn't matter to you, save yourself $100 for the SD600. As a digital camera, its as nice as the SD40 only its doesn't come with any color and the shape is different.

Dr Sam is right. DP is the number 1 review site for camera. The SD40 and SD30 class cameras are nice and the come in many colors but the over all is that great. I would look at the SD600 or the SD630

I own a Canon SD450 and I think it's amazing. I definately believe that Canon is the brand to go with so just just look at what features each camera has. The SD40 will definately give you high quality photos!!

Probably the first thing that drew you to this camera (other than the excellent brand) is that it's available in pretty colours (and yes, it does look cute in pink).
However, from the few reviews that I have seen...it does perform quite well, having the new Digic III processor, but where it doesn't do too good in, is low light, with far too much 'noise'. (and it's promoted as having an ISO up to 1600-which is obviously useless).
I would also recommend either SD600 or SD630 (but they do have a fairly short battery life of up to 160 shots, so you must remember to charge your battery often).
Also, the SD700 IS is another very good choice (however it might be above your budget).
