Kathleen D, as some of the answers have already said, thou shall not commit murder (kill) in the TEN COMMANDMENTS is the scriptural verse that makes embryonic stem cell research immoral. A human embryo is a living human being with a soul.

Life is the indicator that a soul is present. Most people are aware or would agree that when a person dies the soul leaves the body. So, too, a soul enters at the moment of conception. The very definition of "fertilization" tells us that a "new individual" exists at that moment.

I hope this answers you question more thoroughly than the other answers given.

basically, you can always go with "Thou Shalt Not Kill". Some other verses are:
Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knows us before He knits us in the womb. Psalm 139:13-16 speaks of God’s active role in our creation and formation in the womb. Exodus 21:22-25 prescribes the same penalty for someone who causes the death of a baby in the womb as the penalty for someone who commits murder. This clearly indicates that God considers a baby in the womb as just as much of a human being as a full-grown adult. For the Christian, it is a matter of the life or death of a human being made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6).

Thou shalt not kill, in the ten commandments. There are enough ways, and more promising research proven, with adult stem cells anyway. Don't use the unborn babies. People really need to research this more. Check it out.

Hmmmm, let me look... oh wait, there are none.
Don't hide behind your religion when you take a political stance. Don't be afraid to have your own opinion, one which doesn't happen to be based on an ancient book.
