hi,
I would suggest NOT going black! it is SOOO hard to get back out. also from what you said, you wanted to do brown after.... that will not work. Color will not lighten a color, no matter what. Here is a little Professional advice, if you have highlights, I would recommend going to a salon to have the color done, or else you run the risk of turning either green, or orange.
If your hair is brown with orange and yellow tones, and that's what you don't like, find a nice PROFESSIONAL color in either an ash or a neutral/natural brown shade for example a 4N.
that should blend in the brassy tones and give you a natural looking brown.

hope this helped!

i've dyed my hair very many times so i might be able to help...i dyed it black 2 summers ago and decided early this year that i wanted it brown again with some streaks and stuff (that's not important) not because i didn't like the black (i loved it!) but because my moods are constantly changing....the process for reversing the black dye was annoying and loooonggg, with black, you cannot dye any color over it, it will either look really strange and dark green or just stay black ....soo if you know you wanna go brown right after then dont dye it black to begin with, it will be a hassle to get out...instead, go to a salon and CLEARLY explain what you don't like about your current hair color and what, ideally, you want it to look like....you're better off with professionals than with do it yourself as you run the risk of ending up at a salon with a crisis and having to pay the money for professional care anyway, just make sure to state what you want clearly, hair stylists have a tendency to try and make their work "their own" and deviate from your wishes a little bit, still, a little bit may be too much when you look in the mirror ;)

and no, the red and orange streaks will most likely not show through if you choose to dye it black, they'll eventually grow back (assuming they're natural) but the black should cover it all as long as it's done right...i recolored my hair myself again a week ago to blue black and i'm very happy with it but the pink and blue streaks i had near my neck were not completely covered, they turned out a very deep purple and dark turquoise, still very cool but not black, so i can't really guarantee that the red and orange will be completely covered by black dye, i believe it's a matter of chance

-hope this helps!

It would be black. As the color faded you'd start to see the red or orange tones again. Then if you wanted to go lighter it would be very hard to get out of your hair because color does not leave you hair till you cut off. Then you'd have 3 different colors that you'd have to break through to get the lighter shade. Orange and yellow would most likely bethe colors you'd have to get out of your hair. But if your going to keep your hair black for a while then go for it. But I would goto a professional to have it done! Doing that could save you a lot of money in the long run. It might cost more than a box color at wal-mart does but if you f your hair up it's going to cost you a whole lot more to get it fixed. Good Luck!

Well, I had a friend that wanted to dye her hair black. She had light hair, so when she went in the shower, it would turn gray. DON'T USE DYE ON LIGHT HAIR. However, if your hair is darker, then go ahead. Just remember, hair grows, so the red orange WILL come back.

The black pigments will not lighten to brown so easily. I suggest a dark natural brown and then go from there. Try Loreal Preference if you're looking to do it at home. It's a top ranked product. See this source for why. http://www.beautyqa.com/top3.php

if u dye your hair black then all your previous color before would be gone, but then you would have to bleach your hair to get it brown. id reccommend going to a professional to do it so you wont have to go through so many processes that would damage your hair more.

dying your hair black is not the answer. the tones are what give you depth to your hair. without them, your hair will be flat & borring. that is how my hairstylist explained it to me. it really is true! yeah, going to a pro is REALLY worth it so that they can do what you really want. that is why they went to school to do hair.

from experience. if you dyed (not a rinse) your hair jet black over any color, it will be black. as long as you follow the directions as noted in the kit.
