Definitly not too old. I work at a Military Entrance processing station and we sign up people all the time your age an older. We have 35 and 38 and even 40 yr olds coming in the front door constantly.
As long as you pass the entrance physical and ASVAB test for a specific branch, you will be fine.
Most components have programs in place now to provide all new enlistees with pre- basic training guidance or training to improve you performance while at training. Go for it now if its something you really want.
Talk to all branches, dont be bullied or rushed into a decision by any one recruiter or branch and kind of have an idea of what you want out of your period of service before you go see a recruiter. Know what you want to do or what you are interested in, dont be afraid to say no and dont settle for anything less than what you want regardless of any guilt trips or pressures they may throw at you.
Good luck and dont be afraid. Its all in your head!!

When I joined the Air Force my flight had about 5 guys aged 28 to 30 out of about 45 guys. The military doesn't mind the maturity as these guys were welcome.

It will be on you, as you'll have the same rank as 18 to 20 year olds and guys your age will be Sergeants. If you can live with that you'll do just fine.

You can enlist in the Active duty Army up to age 35 and the Army Reserve/National Guard up to age 39 and 364 days. I'm not sure about the other branches.

I am an E-5 in the navy (21 years old) and one of my juniors is 29, I can always tell that he resents working for me since I am so much younger with him. That seems to be the trend with the older guys that join. You may have a drill instuctor in boot camp that is 7 years younger than you yelling in your face and telling you to do stupid things. If that doesnt bother you then go for it.

My son joined at 27 & became a Army Ranger. They have the most toughest training. He went trough with no problem - no recycle as they call it. He said you had to try hard, work as hard as he could & remember you can not run at the front of the troops until your body adjusts. (He ran up front until he slowed to middle & then the Major came up to him to tell him to pck up his pace, he said OK & waited for him to leave & threw up in bushes). He got faster with time but never led. Now he is a Captain & sets a tough pace every morning. Perservance is everything. Good luck!

You will be older than the other folks in Basic but no problem - your added maturity may prove helpful. I joined the Reserves at 32. No problem.

Why not? 28 isn't that old. Pat Tillman joined at 27.

My uncle joined up when he was 29. Of course, he went through collage first, and was promoted kinda quickly...

But, no, I don't think any age is too old to serve one's country. If you want to, sign up.
