I have this sharp pain on the upper left side of my back. It only is there when I breathe deeply. I'm 19 years old, and fairly active. And i'm not a smoker. I also sometimes get a similar pain that feels like its in my heart every time I breathe. Are these related, and what could be causing them??

ok i am not a doctor but that could be a number of things...the beginning of pneumonia...a pulled muscle....a pulmonary thing ( respiratory thing)..plurosey (sp?)...anything...you need to go to your MD...don't wait...and then again it could be stress or anxiety...best to get an answer than to kick the bucket for something that could be fixed!

I get almost the same thing in the same places. It has been off/on forever. Maybe a year? I quit smoking six months ago. I have had the following tests: 2 ultra sounds on my body from my breasts down to the pelvic area. 1 mammogram, too many Xrays to count, 4 cat scans and one tissue cat scan. 1 bone density test and about 400 draws of blood. I am sure I have forgot some test. I go in on Fri. for a bone scan on those areas to see if that can show something.

I was sent to pain management and they only made it worse. I was sent to a stomach specalist and he said he couldn't think of anything to check for.

I do have other medical issues BUT this pain is making me crazy. If they don't find out what it is on Fri. they have no idea where to go next. They all "kind of" think it has to be muscular or bones. My pain in the front left is right at the top of my rib cage and under my left breast. The pain in my back is in between the spine and my side, right in the middle.

It sounds like where yours is located too........?! My front gives shooting pains when I breathe in and some times my back does too.

I will let you know what I find out...............................

Go see a Dr. All the people above are right. It could be any of those things. You need to see someone and not mess around with it because you are only 19 and not a smoker.

You probably pulled a muscle if it only hurts when you breathe, However, go to a doctor and get it checked out. I once broke ribs playing volleyball
