I recently posted a question about how I was worried about my son and I had some responses saying he may be masturbating in the bathroom. Is this normal to do in there? Have any other mothers known their sons to do this?

Yes, it's normal and common. The bathroom has a door that locks and facilities for cleaning up afterwards. It's a common place and a a lot of young boys use the bathroom for this.

At least he's not messing up the bookstore. I swear everytime I go into the can there's a stack of "men's" magazines on the floor and too much toilet paper lying around. It's a fair bet what the last kid in the bathroom was doing.

I think it is very normal to do it there; its a private place where you can lock yourself do your thing and have an excuse to be there for a long time. It wouldn't be so normal if he did it on public places or tried some other weird things. I think a lot of mothers know their sons do this; there's no need to worry, unless he does it too often.

honestly it might be the fact that it is the only place in the house he can get away from everyone or feel safe in order to masturbate. I wouldn't worry about it. Only other thing is that he could have taken up reading while in the bathroom. i guess it tends to be a guy thing.

Can a father answer?
My son used to do that... went in to take a shower, turned the shower on drizzle and did his business.

I didn't like it but it made sense to me that he had a locked room (important), noise masking (drizzle shower) and then he took his real shower.

Nothing you can do about it (except embarrass him that Mom knows). I just wish he'd hadn't tied up the bathroom so long. So, I started making jokes to him about it... "strangling the chicken again?".... "cleaning the gear shifter?"...

It stopped.

it is normal for a boy to masturbate in the bathroom. if he starts doing it anywhere except his room or the bathroom then you should be worried. talk to him about relationships and sex too. you probably dont want him to get a skewed perception of women, for instance, as a means to get off instead of being a person. let him know that masturbation is normal and teach him about privacy (such as when and where it is acceptable according to your house rules) and washing his hands.

It is completely normal. My nephew started to do it when he was 2 and would hide behind the couch to do it. It is just a natural thing that little boys go through. And different kids do it at different stages of their life. Don't embarrass him or reprimand him for it. Its just a natural part of growing up and discovering themselves. He has just realized that it feels good, and is just exploring it.

sometimes they do it in their bed as well but most of the time in the bathroom that's what my brother used to do and my mom kept knocking on the door.
