I'm an atheist so i don't really know what is etiquette for these functions.

If i do get something for the baby, i don't want to get him anything religious, do you have any ideas for a good NON-christian gift?

As much as i would like to get something anti-religious, i will be avoiding this, so sensible answers only please.

I'm also a tightar*e so if a gift is not required let me know...

Thanks all.

If you are going only to the baptism then no gift is expected at all. If, however, the family of the baby hosts a luncheon or reception and serves you food, then it is appropriate to give a small gift. For a baptism/christening, a religious gift is more appropriate, but any "baby" gift would be acceptable. Basically, if they are spending money to feed you then it is appropriate to repay that kindness in the form of a small gift for the baby.

Whether or not there is a reception of any sort, a card is appropriate. They make baptism/christening greeting cards. Shouldn't run your tightar*e more than a few bucks.

If you are even thinking of giving an anti-religious gift to friends of yours who are religious but think enough of you to invite you to their baby's baptism, then you are not a very kind person who respects his friends' beliefs, to say the least.

If these people aren't really such great friends, in your opinion, you should just not even go. It sounds to me like they can't be such good friends if you'd even think of hurting them by giving an anti-religious gift, let alone that you're admittedly a tightar*e about giving them anything at all.

It depends on your culture, in my culture, only the God father/mother will give out the gift, not the audience. Also, if yo would like an something for a baby, you can buy clothes, but avoid dark colors.

Gift card is nice but if you really do not want to give anything for the baby, just buy a card.

Gift is something nice to give but not a necessity if you are a guest. What matters most is your presence and by just being one with them to celebrate the occasion.

Well i would ask the family. The safest thing to do would be to get the basic child toys. A bear or blanket or something.

Just make sure if its a girl- you give her the right color. If its a boy...give him the right color. lol

Or, just get some candles. And be like... 'i wasn't sure what if i were supposed to bring anything'.

So that if you weren't, they dont like take it the wrong way. They see you arent used to this and just accept it. :]

No gift is required. They will be thrilled that you, as an athiest, show up at a Christian rite to support them, and that is gift enough.

If it is required, it is not a gift. If that would be your only reason for getting it, don't.
