I have had 3 Golf 5-speeds ('87, '95, '00) and all had awesome torque-- the GTIs are even more responsive. I drove them all for an average of 175,000 miles before upgrading.

AWESOME car! not sure which one you are looking for. I have a 2002 Golf 4 GTi (132 kw) I enjoy my car every time i step foot into it... by the way i have not lost one race against the Golf 5 GTi! Oh, yeh the last answer is true, brakes are a nightmare. I've also gone through 2 pairs of Tyre's... that's my fault though. the only problem I've had with my car was when there was a 'gonking' sound under the the car. I had it fixed and the mechanic said that its from releasing the clutch and and pushing gas too quickly??? ANYWAY ALL IN ALL GTI'S AS A WHOLE ARE AWESOME NIPPY CARS.

This car will put a smile on your face everytime you push the gas pedal. Maximum torque is achieved at 1800 RPM (in the 2004 GTI) and the engine pulls very nicely in any gear at that point.
The max HP is 180 but the car is light enough to be faster (by a hair) than my 1998 Maxima (which I loved too).

it is an AWSOME car i have a GTI vr6 though....kinda hard to say but if you find a VR6 you should definately get it......in case u dont know its the same car but with a 2.8L v6 engine instead of a 4cyl 1.8L turbocharged. the HP difference isnt that much maybe like 20HP. the torque is definately there to move the car FAST lol ive taken a lot of cars in mine..i really enjoy the car the MK5 is a rele good investment 2 i raced 1 and i beat it but he wast next to me the whole time...you wil have a lot of fun if u get this car....good luck

I have an '01 GTI with 250,000 kms. It has been a great car and is still peppy. I've had no engine work besides a timing belt. Brakes are expensive and you will go through lots of them. Want to buy mine?

My boyfriend is a VW/Audi mechanic... he has said the new GTI's are quick little cars... although Volkswagens are notorious for having various problems, and are very expensive to buy parts for when out of warranty. Being around someone who works on them, my opinion is probably a little jaded, but the VW's I hear him complain about the most are the Touaregs and Phaetons.
