my friends talked me into asking one of the guys that i like but is also SOMEWHAT of a friend to me to winter fling. This guy is in a few of my classes, and i sit next to them in one or two of them, but im not sure when i should ask him, because
1. im not very self confident but am trying to work on it, so i stutter sometimes when im nervous so im not sure if just coming out and saying it would work, seeing as there is a lot i feel i need to say.
2. his popular sort-of friends are in all of them, so its going to be very hard to get his attention without attracting unwanted-and very rude-ears.
3. i was told to send a note but that seems awkward and i don't want it to seem like a date, i want to go 'as friends'...
4. i have NEVER done this before, and no guy has ever asked me except once in middle school, so im extra nervous and feel im not popular enough, though my popular friend told me it would be cute for us 2 go together.

~How should I go about this? any success stories?

p.s. i want to first ask him whether or not he's going, very informally, then if he says no, ask how come, if he says no date, then would u wanna go as friends, etc, and if he says yes, who with, if noone, u wanna go as friends, etc...is this good?

It is always better to do it in person than with a note. I think that you have a very good appraoch to just casually ask him if he is planning on going to the dance and then feel the situation out. I do suggest that you try to ask him when he is not around his friends, it will make things much less ackward for both of you. Good luck to you.

awww! that's so adorable =) but make sure this is something YOU want to do and it's not just your friends pressuring you to do something you really don't want to! I have made that mistake once or twice and then I realized I was getting ready to go out with someone to impress my friends, when I actually had no feelings for the guy. I think you should work up enough courage, speak slowly and clear and stand confident by asking him ( if of course, you feel it is worth asking him. ) good luck!

ok a note seems awkward but it works. write some thing like: I would like to go to the dance with you, just to hang out as friends, nothing like a date or any thing but if you don't want to I understand. short and sweet and hard to beat. also if he doesn't go with you then im sure your friend will. if people say you're a cute couple then you probably are.
