"When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." Exodus 21:20-21
Its ok as long as you keep them in line and dont beat them to bad.

note: this is edited out from king james bible but its in the other ones.

Not any more.
When slaves (indentured servants) were allowed, the scriptures were often addressed to slaves to encourage them to work diligently for the "owners."
The scriptures were also addressing slave owners to treat them fairly.
And, in the Old Testament, the year of Jubilee (every seven years) would come and the debt would be forgiven.

Now, we are taught to follow the laws of the lands in which we live. For most of us, that means slavery is outlawed.
(at least, that's what I tell the household help. LOL)

Most slave owners in America were Christian. The Eyptians or anyone who had power over another group of people owned slaves back in Biblical days. I guess being lazy and living off the fruits of someone elses labor is as old as time itself.

In the O.T., different times and different customs ... but the O.T. provided limitations upon slavery and humane treatment was required. Not buying and selling, and separating members of a family, etc. nor punishment what was more severe than was usual for non-slaves.

In the N.T., slavery was something that existed. It was not encouraged. But read St. Paul to Philemon. And there is one form of "slavery" which is encouraged ... that we should be "bond slaves" of Jesus Christ.

Christian
? 2: Slavery was the economic basis of all cultures in Bible times. What was unique for the Bible is the limit of 6 years of slavery for Hebrews. In addition, there were requirements to buy back Hebrews who were sold to other nations/people and a form of Labor and Industry standard for how to treat them. The Bible was centuries ahead of its time in dealing with the issue.

parts of the bible do promote the notion that slavery is ok. i don't know what additional proof you'd need to realize this book is a load of fictional crap.

most slave owners were christians, as most people in the south were christians in the slavery period in our country's past.

Yes but some sort of slavery has existed in most religions during all these years. It's not something we're proud of and obviously not all white Christians like slavery or it wouldn't have ended!

Most likely Christian, and yes the Bible condones it.

G-d doesn't neet General George S. Patton's permission on anything.
