most of what i will say is probally stuff you've already heard but i hope it will help.

m is always equal to the slope of a line. If you are looking a the line and you know two specific points you can find that slope by using (rise/run).
Take the first point on your line and count how for up or down to the next point. If it's up make that number positive, if down make it negative. This equals your "rise".
Now take the first point and count how far left or right you have to go to get to the same point you used to find your rise. If you go left it's negative and if you go right its positive. This equals "run"
So plug your rise and run in and you get "rise/run" which equals your slope "m". Then just replace that fraction with the letter "m" in your aquation.
Now "b" always equals the y intercept, the point at which the line crosses the y axis, or the point when your x is equal to zero. These all mean the same thing. Just find that point and replace it with "b"....then simplify your equation....

This is kind of hard to explain in just typing but I hope I've helped some!
