It depends on who you are, how sensitive you are. I think it's a gift, from God if we remember old friends.
I still have things my good friend gave me years ago, and I think of how she might be doing. Perhaps if you see the thing you're referring to, you should give them a call and just say hi?
I believe in synchronicity, which means that sometimes things happen for a reason, and perhaps you're supposed to get in touch with your friend again, just because they will always be your friend, and they may need cheering up. How can you know without reaching out to them?

Yes, the item still brings up the person in question. Case and point: I am married now to a wonderful man. The other day, I went into my jewelry box, and found something from my ex - I thought of him immediately. Not in a fond or even hateful way, but I clearly remember getting this ring from him.

I will still wear it or use it and that matter all that counts is the gift not the person unless I am very jmad about the person and then I might give it away to someone or I will trash it.

I think it depends on what the gift was. If it was a favorite perfume or cologne, yes, it would bring thoughts of the other person. If it was a silverware set or something general like that, then no.

I always think about that person. I'm just sentimental in that way.
Seeing the gift might trigger a feeling of sadness from a sense of loss and sometimes it might trigger a positive memory and a happy moment that we might have shared.

Regardless of what the ex feels, be grateful and thankful towards them. This'll let them know that you appreciate them and it will improve your relationship regardless of how your more intimate relationship ended. If you like her, but don't know if she feels the same, try giving her a gift as well, and learn from her reaction.

I would still think about the person who gave it to me, but I have a habit of giving back what was given to me for exactly that reason. I don't want to think about someone I broke up with. :)

Maybe he/she was being nice and wanted that person to know that he/she cared about them but in not that way. Might have to do with how the relationship ended if it ended badly.
