Like some program that downloads the gmail contents to a file on my computer (Mac 10.4)?

You might - if you are a real wizard - be able to do some Ajax wizardry in Firefox and write yourself a program that can do this. But you would have to be a really talented web programmer; really talented.

Otherwise, you are stuck with POP3 access, I'm afraid.

You can use any mail client (Thunderbird for example) to save your mails on the hard drive. Mail client will download all your mails into special folder, so all information will be stored on your HD.
