Canon Digital Rebel, it runs around 700-1000 dollars but is well worth it. I've taken crystal clear images from a car going well over 70 mph. With the accessories, filters, lenses, zooms, etc, you can capture a lot of decent shots

Depends on what's in your wallet.

$600-$900 - go with Canon Rebel or Nikon D80.
Less than $600, Canon S2IS.

Under $400 you have a wide choice. It is very difficult to recommend without knowing your budget.

Canon A640. Canon is rated number one is consumer reports for their point and shoot cameras. I had to do a lot of research on digital cameras. I bought this one for my mom for Christmas. Here is what it is all about.
