If it does, could it slow down or harm the OS X side somehow?

Yes, Windows XP can get a virus while using Boot Camp. But no, the OS X side shouldn't be affected since it uses a different filesystem that Windows usually can't read or write to.

94% of the world populations runs some form of windows that's why they are the target but that does not mean that people using mac operating system do not get virus they most certainly do and using mac and windows together you are more than likely get a virus you must definitely have an anti virus ,plus a firewall plus spy ware without these three you are definably asking for trouble weather it as a mac or windows operating system

Yes a Mac can get a virus while running XP, and if the virus deletes files on your computer, it could screw things up on the OSX side.
