Absolutely not...a lot of couples are choosing to have an intimate ceremony with a much larger reception. Congrats and good luck!!

If you mean that you want a very small ceremony followed later in the day by a large reception, I think that's just fine. It's when people start having two receptions or two weddings that it starts to get out of hand.
But my cousin did what you were suggesting, and it went nicely. In fact, a lot of people were relieved that they didn't have to go to the ceremony.
Although, please keep in mind that if you are planning on having a small wedding because of cost, remember that the reception is where all of your money is going to go.

Weddings at a church don't cost any more if there are more guests, whereas at receptions you pay by the person so if you want to save money you invite people to the wedding and fewer people to the reception. There will be feeling hurt, thats true, but there always seem to be those people who make a point of having their feelings out there for someone to step on.

Face it, it's a wedding. There are going to be hurt feelings. Whether it's over the size, the colors or who has been chosen to be in it. Do the things that are important to you and remember that they are family. They will always be around whether you hurt their feelings or not. Now I'm not saying go out of your way to hurt some feelings, but have the wedding you want and just hope that everyone will accept it. Good luck & many congratulations!

No,that sounds perfectly reasonable to me, choose a small venue for the ceremony and tell them that space is restricted, as they are getting an invite to the reception that should make them all happy. Congratulations on the wedding!!!

I want more of a garden type wedding... like at a really nice southern plantation, have the wedding cerimony in the inside mid-day, with the reception outside in the evening when it cools down. I want chinese (or is it japanese?) lantern-esque lighting with yellow roses and accents of orange with the main color being white. only a few people from each side of the family (like 15-25 each). and the food will be set up like an elegant buffet. thats all i got so far, but i think it will be the perfect wedding for me (if my future husband likes it too).

Whenever someone does this the general feeling is that they are having the large reception to collect all the presents. I think it is tacky.
I recommend either
small wedding - small reception OR
big wedding - big reception

My wife and I did something very similar. We invited only CLOSE family and a few very close friends to the wedding, and then had everybody else out for the reception.
In our case, this was necessary due to the area we were getting married at. But, it worked out fine, and to my knowledge nobody got butt hurt over it.
One tip for you (off topic, but use full) : when cleaning up afterwords, make sure you put any money/checks you get from cards in your wallet/purse!! We were in a hurry, and put them in the case that held the champagne glasses. About 3 years later we opened it up and discovered about 100.00 in checks and a few store gift cards in there!!!
Good luck

No, not in the least. Family should understand, as long as you can manage to keep the ceremony to immediate family only. The instant Uncle Roy finds out Aunt Judy was invited and he wasn't, that's when you start to have issues.
