what imagery comes to mind when you think of your parents and your son? try talking to a tattoo artist as well because they'll have an idea possibly and once you start talking about what you want they could probably start drawing something out with you right there or at least sketching it. i'm lucky enough to still have my mom around and recently got her writing tattooed on me so that it will be around long after she's gone.
just go with your heart and whatever feels right.

any ideas you have can all be used. if you will go to a custom tattoo artist and tell them what you want and they should be able to come up with something perfect for you. get something that is meaningful to you, something that symbolizes your parents and your child. there are so many wonderful options, it all depends on what you want.

Something classic, perhaps hidden somewhere like the outside of the upper thigh... If you want to be unique don't do the lower back...However, allot of people say that tats in that area are sexy... No images, don't do lots of color it will fade with age.. No skulls or dragons, webs, knives, get the picture.... symbolism can be really cool if it's done right... Chinese characters, Polynesian designs can be cool, some other personally defined symbol

how about a 3-link chain (like a chain bracelet type of thing) with the first letter of your parents name/childs name in each of the holes of the links. The chain can show how you've gone threw tough times, but nothing can keep you down. The chain will also stand for strength... goodluck.

A tattoo is a very personal thing. I don't think that a bunch of strangers can answer this for you. This is a decision only you can make.
Research your tattoo artist and when you find one you are comfortable with, talk to him or her about your ideas.
Good luck.

Try looking up Chinese or Japanese symbols. They usually have longer explanations and can explain more than one thing. Or you could just get the symbol for love? It would look good on a shoulder or lower back, right in the center.

Find a really good artist and give them all of your ideas. Think of symbols that represent these people to you, and a good artist should be able to design one that is unique to you and where you are placing it.
