I am a very decent singer. I have been in musicals and performed numerous pieces in concerts, though mostly in choir. I have a fantastic ear for music and sound. But, I am in no way a superb vocalist.

Is it possible to be taught and trained to have a better, more tonal quality to your voice? Or is it really just nature's luck of the drawl as far as talent. I always wondered if paying for a vocal coach was ever really worth it.

The job of a good vocal instructor is to help the singer to enhance the voice nature gave them.

Since every voice is unique, if you are teachable you can definitely improve upon the quality of the voice, often by pin-pointing bad habits in your singing and breaking them. (Case in point: I've sung for as long as I can remember with great success. Little did I know, coming into lessons, that all along, though I'd gotten a great tone, I'd been placing my sound way too far back in my throat and actually making myself work a lot harder than I needed to!) This does not mean that every man will turn out to be a Pavarotti and every woman will become the next Renae Flemming (I have no idea if I spelled her name correctly)--every voice has special, unique qualities to it that give that particular voice character. A good instructor will draw that out until one day you think, "Wow! That's my voice...who knew I sounded that good?"

If it wasn't for private instruction there is little chance I would have the voice or the range I have today. I have found it definitely worth it.

No teacher, no matter how good, can teach you to have a great voice. What a good teacher can, and will do, is teach you how to use the voice you have to best advantage!

You will often hear of great singers who were "self taught", but I am pretty sure the vast majority have had some kind of training, and continue to get help even after they have achieved some measure of success.

You definitely should try to get some lessons. Who knows, maybe you're a "diamond in the rough"!

Very few are born or gifted singers. Voice needs to be cultured through 'Voice Culture'. Although, you have a very good voice and rhythm sense, you need an expert who can teach you and can point out that where , why and what mistakes you are making and of course how to correct them. He/ she will enhance the quality of your voice. The expert will teach you some techniques also which you have to adopt for singing it includes modulation of your voice, Correct posture for singing, handling of microphones and selection of melody and rhythm for a particular lyric.......... and much more.

Definitely, you just need to find the proper help. If you think your really good try getting a private tutor to teach you how to improve your range or something else. If you don't think your that good or money is a problem then get private lesson from you school chorus teacher. I've taken them for about a year and I've gone from an alto to a soprano. It really works!

Anyone can be taught how to sing, but to be really good you have to have talent. on the other hand if you're considering a career i would think voice training would be a must. why not try a coach if you can. you can always give it up, but you'll always wonder if you don't.
