First dates are pretty stressful, because both people are self conscious, hoping to make a good impression, etc. Best thing is to take out as much anxiety and pressure as you can.

Pick an activity that you both enjoy, but one that also lends itself to conversation while you are doing it... say mini-golf, pool, etc. You both are doing something, so you don't have to be trying to talk all the time, and it's fun. Hard to be stressed when you are doing something you find enjoyable, and it's easier to be yourself.

I hate the idea of eating on a first date, because if you go to a restaurant and have a wait to get your food, all in that time span there is just you two there at the table, and a great deal of pressure to say something and keep talking. Why put yourself through that?

Movies are good, but only as an add on after you've had a fun "talking" activity.

Movies are not a good idea, because you can't talk and get to know each other. Dinner is ok, but I think hiking would be better. Do something where you can really spend time together and talk and see each other in different situations.

To a nice restaurant and bowling afterwards. That way you two won't feel like you'll have to make a move in the movie theatre. You can talk and get to know eachother and laugh at how you play at the bowling alley.

Go on a hike, or a picnic thats always cute. Or do something sporty. Like do mini golf or play frisbee or go on a bikeride together.
