Yes, forgiveness is very important because God's word tells us that if we want our sins forgiven by Him, then we have to be willing to forgive others. Forgiving someone will set you free, meaning that any anger or hostility you felt & realizing that humans are all imperfect & are bond to make mistakes will help us to be forgiving.

Forgiveness is the opposite of resentment. When you have resentment you are carrying a burden of emotion, usually anger. When you have anger you are using up energy to keep it at bay, and possibly not always succesfully. This energy, meant to keep yourself happy and healthy, gets used to manage your resentment instead of managing the proper functioning of your whole being. As consequence you neglect your health and then you become ill.
In order to forgive we must understand completely why and how somebody hurt us. Once we understand fully, we can see that they have been hurt by others before. Then we can have empathy and compassion and therefore be able to forgive. We all have hurt someone in our lives, and we all would like to be forgiven. When we are children and don't have much experience in life, we hurt others because we don't yet know the consequences of our actions. But as soon as we learn those consequences, we start or must start taking responsibility for our actions. Hurting from not knowing is innocence. Hurting knowingly has no innocence.
All too often the trauma of having been hurt makes us blind with rage to our own actions and/or intentions and we end up hurting others, sometimes on purpose, sometimes without realizing it. The important thing is to stop hurting each other and be aware of every little action we make and how it affects others and the world. Everyone in the world and their ancestors have experienced much hurt. It's time to start forgiving and move onto a world where we don't hurt each other nor ourselves anymore.

In the 'Our Father' prayer, we pray for forgiveness according/cos we forgive others.
Also, in Beatitudes, it says mercy is shown to those who are merciful.
But mostly we forgive BECAUSE God forgave us.
