Don't take pressurized containers.

Make it so that there isn't any air pressure inside by squeezing the substance, shampoo for example. open the bottle and squeeze it until the shampoo comes all the way up to the top then close the bottle back up while the shampoo is still at the top. The best thing overall though is probably just to stick it in a plastic bag. And remember don't stick it on your carry-on!!!

There is a new requirement regarding liquids on airplanes. You are only allowed to take 3 bottles of 3 ounces each and they must be in a 1 quart zip-lock bag. AFTER you pass thru security at the airport, you may buy other liquids at the airport shops. You can call your airline to confirm this.

perhaps you should look into buying "travel size" toiletries. just enough shampoo for a few washes, instead of carrying around a heap of the shampoo. this way if it does happy to spill, there will be less shampoo to spill out.
most pharmacies and department stores sell travel size fo most toiletries.

Linnea's suggestions are good. Make sure the tops are on tight. We've always packed toiletries in zip top bags. Remember those regulations for liquids, creams and gels. No container over 3 oz (90ml) in the US (100ml or 3.4oz in the UK and Europe) and they must all fit in a one quart zip top bag that closes comfortably. Here's the US Transportation Security Administration's website with their list of permitted and prohibited items: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm Here's the British Airways site http://baa.com/ for reference.
