How can cats purr when eating and drinking without choking?

Ignore anyone that thinks they know the answer.
The truth is Sciencetist are still confused. They cannot figure out how exactly it is made and where exactly it is made and how it is emitted. So noone actually knows the TRUE/REAL answer as it stands.
( Obviously their Larix is not the origin if they can eat and breath while purring. While they breath it may change their Purr but this only suggest the obvious... that muscles are involved. When you breath many things expand and increase in power... the oxygen makes your muscles work better... so they will be stronger.. but.. this doesn't tell anything for a Cats Purr. This is why it's good to be taught to breath while giving birth,.. it helps control your muscles.)

It turns out that cats have special wiring! The wiring travels from the brain to the muscles in the voice box, and this wiring is able to vibrate the muscles so that they act as a valve for air flowing past the voice box. The muscles work both during inhalation and exhalation, which creates the impression that cats can purr continuously. The air passes through the valve, which opens and closes rapidly to create the purring sound.

I wish I knew! My cats have the most calming purr I have ever heard. It is so peaceful. They purr when they eat, drink, sleep, bathe and even when the play together. I don't know where the sound comes from but I do know that you can feel it. Almost like it vibrates, somewhere down around where their heart is. I wish I could purr.

The cat's purr is actually a spasm of their diaphragm (the muscle that allows lungs to fill up with and push out air). Science is uncertain as to the reason cats purr...it seems to be triggered by comfort, pleasure, and occasionally, fear. The reason they can purr while eating and drinking is due to the fact that the area the cat purrs "from" does not interfere with normal breathing.

My cats tend to pur when they are in a more relaxed state. Though not when sleeping or playing. I have never heard my cats pur when eating or drinking.

ummm. they don't. You probably hear somthing else like swallowing the food.
Purring is just like when we hum, our vocal cords vibrate. Just like in a cats throat, exept it sounds a little different.

actually, people are still trying to figure this out scientifically. i think that they can because it comes from their lower chest, and stomach. Hope this helps. there are some sources that help out with this question.
