My hair is a medium brown color, and i was wondering what sort of colors show up well on that shade without pre-lightening it?

You want to stick with a shade within two tones above or below your own. So you can go darker brown, or a lighter brown/reddish brown, but don't go red, black, or blonde. I really like Clairol's natural instincts. It's better for your hair and doesn't reeek of Ammonia. Try their try it on studio here: http://www.clairol.com/security/login.jsp?dest=/try-it-on-studio/process_tios.jsp®loc=tios to get an idea of what colors would look best on you. Just register and upload a picture and you're good to go. Have fun dying your hair!

I have dark brown hair and have discovered that if I use Blonde dye, it comes out a brassy auburn, auburn dyes come out dark, deep red dyes are beautiful as are blacks and blue-blacks. Be careful with some of the deeper purple reds, it could end up more purple than you might wish.
