Federal agents are exempt from bargaining unions. In other words, they can NOT join unions.

Federal Agents are paid more because they are supposed to work more complex cases that patrol officers.

Each agency has a different "journeyman" level. This is the level where the agent can promote to without competition.

For example, if you check out www.usajob@opm.gov for GS 1811 (criminal investigator positions) you will find that agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) which is part of Homeland Security has a GS 13 journeyman level. That is about $100k depending on locality and overtime.

But another Homeland Security agency the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) has a GS 12 journeyman level.

Go figure why.

State troopers make 60k most police officers are lucky to get 35k. The feds make between 60 and 125k. But then again most federal officers are members of unions. But nobody likes unions right?

Feds generally make more than local police, but the workload varies, as you already know.

Generally local agencies (city police) make substantially more than state or federal officers. At least that's the case in Ca.

The Feds (State and Federal agencies) FBI, DEA, BNE, CDC, ATF...work harder for a lot less money.
