(1Timothy 2:1-to-6) I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

(1Ti 2:2) For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

(1Ti 2:3) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

(1Ti 2:4) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

(1Ti 2:5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

(1Ti 2:6) Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Thanks, RR

First, be prepared for this to take quite a while. Preventing violence in your community requires you to get involved with the members of your community and to show patience, respect, tolerance and most of all - love. Can you love a young man who might not have your best interests at heart? Can you love a drug addict on the streets? Can you love a prostitute? Do you love your fellow man enough to get into the gutter beside them and give them a helping hand out? My friend, if you can answer these questions within your own heart then maybe your community stands a chance. Take a good hard look around at others who may be trying to do the same within the community. You may have to look hard to find them, they usually aren't the ones who stand out or who make a big fuss about what they are doing. They are the quiet ones who are out there every day - even when the news crews aren't out there. See what and whom you might find and learn from them.

If you decide to continue with this project, you have my heartfelt respect and joy. Good luck, Jasmin.

Organize a neighborhood Community Watch. Select a leader and those interested in joining can choose a day/evening/time they are availble to go, as group of 2, 3, or 4 around the community that needs to be watched.

Also, contact your Police Precinct. In New York City we have neighborhood Auxilliary Police Officers (trained by the Police Department) to volunteer to work with the Police Department to walk the neighborhood. Two Auxilliary Officers walk the neighborhood together.

The Auxilliary Officers wear Police Uniforms (without the Police Department Badge). The volunteers carry handcuffs and a Police Walking Stick.

There's a lot you can do - great question! In most cities, there are violence prevention and anti-bullying programs that you could get involved. Mentoring or being a big sister could also be helpful. You could also donate money or time to a shelter for assaulted/battered women - many of them have violence prevention projects. I wish you all the best!

Find different community projects. Try starting up a committee in your neighborhood. Safe places to live are places you can stay living in.
