The title "Dr." refers to anyone who has received a doctorate level of education in their field. This can include MD, chiropractic, PT, PhD, EdD....it does not imply medical doctorate unless followed by the title, M.D. Unfortunately, the general public does not necessarily realize this distinction. It is for this reason I choose not to use it, but I am perfectly within my right to do so.

I am not in Maryland but I will say that you can use the title of Doctor with the DPT. However, you should make sure to distinguish yourself from a MD by introducing yourself as a Doctor of Physical Therapy instead of just "Dr. Smith."

There are no laws on this.

It is accepted that anyone with a PhD or an MD or even a JD can use the title doctor.

(I have to say I don't agree with society on the MD thing. Getting an MD is VERY different from getting a PhD. All you have to do for an MD is show up, and memorize some text books. A PhD takes actual work.)

The general thought, among physical therapists and I believe by the APTA as well, is that it is inappropriate for a physical therapist to call themself doctor. This is a clinical doctorate degree and, although earned, does not signify doctoral status (i.e. M.D., D.O., PhD, EdD). Some people will take this liberty and they have that right, however it is not considered appropriate. People such as this may feel the need to pump themselves up more than they ought. Regardless, someone with a DPT is not that much different than a BPT or MPT (the APTA just keeps requiring higher degrees...what's after DPT?).
